Elk Grove United Methodist Scholarships

Over the years, the EGUMC has awarded many scholarships to deserving students to help them achieve their educational and career goals.  The EGUMC Scholarship Committee encourages graduating high school seniors and continuing college students to submit their applications to the church office at the earliest possible time.

Provide Information

All students must meet academic requirements, demonstrate financial need, and have proof of enrollment from an accredited college or university, trade school or certification program.

Church Participation

All students must be either a member of the EGUMC, constituent or has regularly volunteered in the ministry and mission of our church.

Other Factors Considered

  • a proven track record of school or church leadership or community involvement,
  • strong academic achievement,
  • financial need, and
  • receipt of a completed application by the deadline.

Scholarship Application

2024 Fall Scholarship Application Deadline: June 30, 2024

Students only have to submit one application and the Scholarship Committee will decide on which fund to use, if selected, based on the availablity of funds.

Exception is the Lee-Ortiz Scholarship, it has a supplemental essay.

Lee-Ortiz Scholarship

For Graduating High School Seniors attending college in the fall semester

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Students must be low-income and from diverse racial backgrounds
  • Must submit supplemental essay

This scholarship was established in 2018 by members of our church, Sandee Lee and Dan Ortiz, to promote and to celebrate diversity and inclusion in our community.  Its purpose is to assist low-income students from diverse racial backgrounds to achieve their educational and career goals.  College bound, graduating high school seniors from the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are encouraged to apply.  This scholarship is awarded annually and requires a supplemental essay for the award.

Barbara Evelyn Morse Memorial Scholarship

For Graduating High School Seniors attending college in the Fall Semester

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher

This scholarship was established in 2009 by the family of Barbara Evelyn Morse in her memory.  Evelyn, known by many in the congregation as “Evie”, was a life-long member of our church and educator for the EGUSD.  College bound, graduating high school seniors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are encouraged to apply.  This scholarship is awarded on an annual basis.

Dr. Linda Inlow Memorial Scholarship

For Graduating High School Seniors & Continuing College Students

In 2010, Joe McIntire established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Reverend Dr. Linda Inlow.  Dr. Linda Inlow was a former pastor of Elk Grove United Methodist Church (EGUMC) from 1986 – 1997.  She was a great advocate of education for all students among many of her passions.  Generally, this memorial scholarship is awarded to continuing college students who intend on finishing their degree but are in need of financial help.   This scholarship is generally awarded twice a year.

T.R. Smedberg Memorial Scholarship

For Graduating High School Seniors & Continuing College Students

The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Scholarship was established in his memory by his family in 1990.  T.R., as he was known, was a teacher, school principal, and served as Superintendent of Schools for Sacramento County until his retirement in 1969.  Mr. Smedberg, was a member of our church and a prominent community leader who had a park and middle school named after him.  One of his proudest accomplishments was the establishment of the Sly Park outdoor educational facility located south of Pollack Pines off Highway 50.  He was also instrumental in creating the church scholarship fund that has been awarding scholarships to college students for more than 60 years. Scholarships in memory of T.R. Smedberg are generally awarded on an annual basis.

EGUMC General Fund Account Scholarship

For Graduating High School Seniors & Continuing College Students

This is the main scholarship account that holds most of the funds donated by the generous support from the congregation or fundraised by the EGUMC Scholarship Committee.  Funds from this account gives the Scholarship Committee the flexibility to award scholarships to graduating high school seniors or continuing college students attending vocational training, academic institutions, continuing education, and other non-traditional educational programs.  Scholarships from this fund are generally awarded twice a year.
